On this recording KEN ESPEN recalls some of the organ favourites featured in past years by the world famous American King of the Keyboard, KEN GRIFFIN. The songs range from evergreen oldtimers such as Love's Old Sweet Song and Till We Meet Again right up to modern film hits like Wooden Heart. For those who want a Latin mood there are those top pops of the 'twenties It Happened In Monterey, Ramona and In A Little Spanish Town.
Every tune on this record will revive some happy memory. Through the talented fingers of Ken Espen, the music of Ken Griffin lives again. - omslag

The Lourenso Marques Radio Programme "SPECIAL OCCASIONS!" is, without doubt, one of the most popular reguest programmes on the air, and for this record Ken Espen has selected some of the well-loved melodies that are continually being asked for by listeners, to mark some birthday, wedding anniversary or other "special occasion." The songs are all evergreen favourites, tunes that will never die, and Ken invests them with that individual styling that has made him one of South Africa's top organist's.
Many of these songs, incidentally; are melodies which Ken has broadcast scores of times for, since 1957, he has been featuring them regularly in response to requests in the Springbak Radio programme "Birthday Book."
KEN ESPEN has been broodcasting regularly since 1939, and IS a versatile musician, who is also an accomplished performer on the piano, piano-accordion, cello and double bass. He bas made oppearances as conductor, band-leader, musical director and Eisteddfod adjudicator, and composes and arranges. In Johannesburg he runs his own School of Music. For several years he was resident cinema organist at the Plaza Theatre, Johannesburg.
We feel sure that you will want to play this record not only on special occasions, but on every occasion that you can. - RT - omslag

With this LP, Ken Espen has scored a world-wide FIRST! Never has anything like it been done before . . . either in America or Europe. Never-before has the home musician been able to play to the accompaniment of top-line professional drummers... without having to worry about which key to play in (this is a pure rhythm record - you can even use it instead of a metronome!) . . . or worry about learning new tunes (any song that's in the correct time can be played to this accompaniment).
The drummers you'll hear on this record are three of the best in Africa - Andy Johnson, Gene Latimore and Roy Hanger. All the tracks are played in strict tempo.
Whether you're practising by yourself or playing at a party. . .
whether you play piano, organ, harmonica, piano-accordion, guitar or any other instrument . . .
whether you're just a beginner or an accomplished musician . . .
whether you play by ear or read music . . .
whether you keep to the melody or improvise as the spirit moves you . . .
you'll find your playing improves - and you get more fun out of it when you're accompanied by this fabulous rhythm LP!

HOW TO USE THIS RECORD
Decide on the tune you want to play and the tempo you want to play in. There's a choice of 11 different tempos on this record. Now, put on the track you want to p|ay with, wait until you hear the rhythm - and start playing. For example, if you want to play a slow foxtrot, such as Days of Wine and Roses, put on track 3 of side 1. The rhythm will be right, and you'll find it's easy, it's fun - and you'll be amazed at the amount of extra skill you seem to develop and the amount of extra enjoyment you get out of playing to the accompaniment of this wonderful record!

Read what South Africa's leading musicians have to say about Ken Espen's Rhythm-maker . . .
DAN HILL: "A great idea. This record is of equal value tothe professional and the amateur. . I congratulate Ken Espen on a very useful innovation."
RALPH BALESON: "I'm really sold on this LP. It's the most for practising with . . .I wouldn't be without it."
CHARLES SEGAL: "All musicians, professional, semi-pro and amateur, owe Ken Espen a vote of thanks for producing this record. It's of terrific value to everybody who plays an instrurrient."
DRUMMERS TOO! Apart from its value as a rhythm accompaniment for melody instruments, this LP will be of considerable value to drummers as an object lesson in technique and strict tempo playing in different rhythms.
This record has been made with all the latest high fidelity sound characteristics. For best results play it on a TEPPAZ record player. - omslag

Time marches on and Ken Espen tags along swinging merrily on the organ. This being his 25th Long Player, Ken has suddenly stopped, turned around, taken out a pair of musical binoculars and looked way back to 1910, where he spotted a little number called "Let Me Call You Sweetheart". After scanning 1911, he found "Alexander's Ragtime Band", 1912 "When Irish Eyes Are SmiIing" and so on up to 1958 "A Certain Smile", 1959 "Personality" and 1960 "Wooden Heart".
Popular Ken Espen has had wide experience in the musical field as conductor, composer, Musical Director, accompanist, arranger, broadcaster, reconding artist, teacher and adjudicator. Ken's style of playing progresses with time and, above all, he retains his individuality, which accounts for his success on disc.
Ideal for dancing, parties or easy-listening, "The March of Time" is another brilliant idea of Ken's for an L.P. which is bound to excite his thousands of fans throughout the country.

- omslag

It is a collection of Hill Billy and Cowboy songs, played in strict dance rhythm by popular Ken Espen at the Hammond Organ - the sort of music that will appeal to everybody from teen-ager to grandparent, CBS Dance Party records are not only meant for accompaniment to dancing, though all the music is played in strict tempo. They are planned to be enjoyable listening as well: the music is the kind that you can hear with pleasure at any time of the day or night.
About the Music on this Record . . .
THE SUNSET TRAIL is a survey of Western music from the days of Stephen Foster right up to today. Much of it is traditional, while others (like The Yellow Rose Of Texas) are traditional songs brought up-to-date.
Through the medium of the movies and popular songs, the whole conception of "opening up the West" has remained alive not only in the United States but all over the world. Covered wagons, sunset trails and prairie moons mingle with sentimental ballads (generally of a somewhat morose nature) to re-create the days when pioneer families trekked across the American Continent in the face of every conceivable hazard. Latterly, the singing cowboy has carried on the musical tradition . . . bringing a breath of fresh air to the otherwise smoky atmosphere of Tin, Pan Alley.
Billy Hill, composer of The Lost Round Up, is credited with putting the jingle of spurs and the creak of the chuckwagon into popular music, and his list of hits would seem to bear this out- Wagon Wheels, Empty Saddles, Lights Out, Down the Oregon Trail among them.
The prim name of Alice Hawthorne looks out-of place in a collection of this kind. Actually Miss Hawthorne never existed, except as the pseudonym of Richard Milburn, a Philadelphia barber who was an outstanding whistler and guitarist. Whispering Hope is, in fact, about a 100 years old. Another old-timer is Silver Threads Among The Gold, published in 1873. Unaccountably, it languished almost unheard for 30 years until it was picked up by Richard J. Jose, a celebrated tenor with Primrose & West's Minstrels, who successfully gave it a second life. Somewhat similar is the more recent history of Carolina Moon written by Joe Burke and Benny Davis in 1924 and shelved for four years until Morton Downey featured it and set it on the road to success. The Stephen Foster item - Beautyul Dreamer - was published as "Foster's last song" in 1864, the year of his tragic death. In January of that year he was found badly wounded, in a cheap Bowery lodging house and was removed to hospital where he died three days later. The brilliant composer of so many classic songs possessed at his death only the ragged clothes he wore, 38 cents and a piece of paper on which he had scribbled "Dear friends and gentle hearts"-the title for a song he never lived to write.
Cole Porter brought his astringent pen to bear on the Western-type ballad when he wrote Don't Fence Me In, a major hit during and after World War IIwhen Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters made a recording of it which is still frequently heard over the air.
So roll back the carpet and prepare to enjoy a trip down THE SUNSET TRAIL. Got your boots and saddle? You're all set for a rare good time!
About Ken Espen . . .
For 20 years, Ken Espen has been a leading musical figure in South Africa and his work has taken him into virtually every field of music . . . conducting, composing, accompanying, arranging, broadcasting, recording, teaching and adjudicating. On one occasion he even conducted the band for Boswell's Circus, when the resident conductor was indisposed for three days.
Ken has composed literally hundreds of numbers, but the one of which he is particularly proud is a piece for accordion called "Scaler's Waltz because it is based on musical scales. It won a composition contest judged by the world famous concert accordionist Tollefsen and is now a test piece in the accordion eisteddfod.
Ken Espen's experience at the Hammond Organ goes back many years. He was, in fact, the first man to introduce this instrument as part of a dance orchestra, in the days when he played at His Majesty's Roof Garden, Johannesburg, with Eve Boswell as his vocalist.
Today, Ken leads an active musical life. He is the only cinema organist left in Johannesburg and can be heard most nights at one or other of the city's theatres., He has fulfilled all his ambitions save one to write music for cartoon films.
Of THE SUNSET TRAIL, Ken says he was thrilled when he heard the tape - not' so much for his performance as for the balance and quality of recording. We feel he is being modest and that both artist and recording engineer have produced a thoroughly professional and highly entertaining record. - R. I. B. WEBSTER
