Over the past few years, Boeremusiek has come alive and is again being embraced by young and old. Today the instrument is played with great success by talented young musicians like Ricus Nel, Jasper Janse van Rensburg and Henning Joubert.
Now comes an album built around and embracing this beloved instrument featuring these three talented musicians. "Music producer Junior Botha came up with an idea for a concertina album and approached Henning," Ricus recalls.
"Henning thought it was a good idea, but said that the album needed more than one concertina. They then asked Jasper and me to also play on the album. Theo Erasmus, a master accordion player and old hand when it comes to boeremusiek, and Rob Watson on drums make up the rest of the team."
The result is an album of 15 new and traditional songs - among them "Skoffel Vir Oom Danie", "Oom Jannie Het Gaan Jag" and "Daspoort Vastrap". Ricus was responsible for not only the concertina, but also the banjo, guitar and keyboard and Jasper played concertina and bass guitar on the album. Boeremusiek is no longer something uit die oude doos - just the fact that the three young concertina players' combined age is under a hundred years, shows that boeremusiek is back with a youthful bang!
