SLIM WHITMAN is one of the foremost exponents of Country Music all time. His particular talent portrays an expression of the world as it really exists and not as an entity of frivolous fantasy.
Tampa, Florida born Otis Dewey Whitman, Jr.
has successfully toured two continents. He was a smashing success at the famed London PaIladium - where he broke all attendance records. Here he captivated audiences who were exposed for the first time to American music presented in the Country idiom.
In A LONELY HEART, SLIM WHITMAN
demonstrates his ability to communicate a message of loneliness for which you will experience great compassion. He relives for you those magical moments enjoyed by his fans all over the world, creating an emotional impasse in his renditions of COLD EMPTY ARMS - AT THE END OF NOWHERE and HOW CAN I TELL.
Here in America - Country Music is the composite symbol of Iife - love - hunger - pain and joy. The realism of these feelings are tenderly displayed by SLIM as he sings TORMENTED, A LONESOME HEART and DARLIN' DON'T CRY.
It has been prophesied that little or no legacy will evolve from much of our contemporary music; This is perhaps a legitimate conjecture as so many of the pop hits of the day escape our memory in a relatively short time.
Hopefu|ly - Country Music is considered a segment which will endure and contribute to a worthy heritage.
A LONELY HEART featuring SLIM WHITMAN bears out this premIse - enjoy it to the fullest. - omslag

That Birmingham Jail fellow, Slim Whitman, is one of the world's most agreeable people. . . he never argues with Fate.
As a result, some of the darndest things have happened to change the course of his life. For example -
Slim grew up where the major league baseball teams conduct their spring training, and enthusiasm for the game led him to develop a pitching skill second to nobody among teen-agers. He was sure to be headed for a career on the mound, when all of a sudden -
Up loomed World War II and he enlisted inthe Navy. Aboard ship, he found a battered old guitar which he proceeded to learn to play, and he sang a few tunes, too, along the way. He hardly gave a thought to becoming a professional entertainer until -
His home-town radio station grabbed him fresh out of the service and gave him a show every day. So, before long -
A recording olficial rushed in and pleaded, "Sign here!" Then, someone got the idea Slim might be popular in England, and -
He became the first country-western performer ever to tour that land, scoring a huge, unpredictable success at the famed London Palladium, a triumph he has repeated many times since.
Well, none of these things happened strictly through"luck," of course: he was a fine pitcher because he was a born athlete, and he became an international singing - star because he was gifted with a voice and a magnificent ability for expressing emotions.
In all Slim's career, Birmingham Jail and I'm Casting My Lasso Towards the Sky are unquestionably among his.most extraordinary performances. But your enjoyment of Slim's singing doesn't stop there . . . no sir!
We're furnishing you a whole big batch of this boy's best! - omslag

Many overseas artists have visited South Africa, but generally they have made their personal appearances in the main centres and have not been seen by the very large proportion of their record buying public. Not so with Slim Whitman - Slim visited and appeared in no less than 32 towns in a tour lasting six weeks and covering over 5000 miles. Wherever he appeared the public took him to their hearts, not only for his singing, but through his warm and friendly manner. He met, shook hands with, and signed autographs for hundreds of fans at each performance.
During the tour a new singing team was born, that of Slim Whitman and Virginia Lee. Night after night, show after show, Slim and Virginia 'brought the house down' with their duets, "Tennessee Yodel Polka" and "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" both of which are already big hits in this country and look like achieving the same success overseas.
Virginia, in her own act, re-established herself as the Republic's most popular female vocalist and literally stopped the show every performance.
Slim brought with him to this country an outstanding Hawaiian Steel Guitar player of the highest order, and Lester Fry's playing of this highly fascinating instrument added considerably to the success of the show.
Some of South Africa's leading musicians accompanied the show throughout its long and successful run. Chris du Toit's arrangements and leadership, personality and guitar playing; Flippie van Vuuren's versatility on piano, sax, clarinet, accordian and concertina and able bass playing and drumming from Danie Muller and Tony Gunning respectively were in a greatmeasure responsible for the shows outstanding acceptance by all sections of the public.
It will be a long time before South African audiences forget the hilariously funny act of Canadian born Jerry Leader, the smooth and mystifying performance of Leo and his Doves. These two completed the overall excellence of this show. On this record Slim sings two brand new songs never previously released in this country "That's How the Yodel was Born" (recorded in Johannesburg during a very crowded programme at the same time as his two duets with Virginia Lee were done) and "Reminiscing" Slim's latest American release.
The remaining four solo numbers were diilicult to select because each and every song he sang brought forth thunderous applause, but the four songs chosen for this record represent a cross section of the songs sung by Slim Whitman everywhere.

- omslag

Slim Whitman, as his millions of fans throughout the civilized world know, is a man of many talents. Some of them are not too well known, such as his mechanical ability (he worked as a shipfitter in his hometown of Tampa, Florida, before and just after serving in the Navy during World War II) and his athletic ability (he gave up shipfitting to become a professional baseball pitcher).

His musical ability, however, is what has made his name a household word from America to Zanzibar. Anyone who has ever heard a radio, put a coin in a juke box or bought a record knows that Slim Whitman sings exceptionally well and plays guitar as if he were born to do just that. But one of Slim's most unique musical abilities is frequently overlooked - his yodeling.

Yodeling is almost a lost art today, The warbling type of singing is most commonly heard among the Alpine mountaineers of Switzerland and northern Italy. It is also heard in rural areas of the United States. But few singers can manipulate the difficult change from normal singing tone to falsetto and back to normal in quick succession that creates the unusual sound. Few try it, except for some country and western singers. However, Slim not only does it, he is considered to be perhaps the best yodeler in all of show business.

In this album, Slim shows why he is entitled to that consideratiom also once again displays his, amazing versatllity. Rare indeed, is the singer who would attempt such twitde variety of types of songs - "Hi Lili, Hi Lo" (muscal comedy), "Sioux City Sue" and "Mockin" Bird Hill" (pop), "Cowboy's Heaven" and "Rainbow on the Rio Colorado" (western) and "Gonna Find Me A Blue Bird" and "Weary and Blue" (country) - as Slim does here. Rare, indeed, is the singer who has The ability to handle all these different forms of music. And more rare yet is the singer who can effectively, easily and naturally slip in and out of a yodel to make each song more interesting and appealing.

But Slim Whitman is a rare person. The Florida boy had no formal training in music, but when he found an old guitar on the ship to which he was assigned in the Navy he began teaching himself to play it to pass away some of the long, lonely hours at sea. And, being lefthanded, he had to learn to strum the venerable instrument backwards. But master it he did, and soon. he was having a wonderful time amusing himself and entertaining his shipmates by accompanying his own singing. another of his accomplishments - so many of which he has that he well earns the tribute of being termed "a rare person".

Rare, too, is his penchant for ignoring the lure of the big cities like Hollywood and New York, preferring to enjoy with his wife and daughter the home he loves in his adopted Middleburg, Florida, And equally rare, in his business, is his desire to spend his free time in the great outdoors, fishing and hunting, rather than joining his fellow celebrities at parties and night clubs.

Yes, Slim Whitman is a rare person. He likes people and likes to sing for them. And he is humbly proud the so many people like to hear him do just that.

Since high fidelity recording includes a true reproduction of all sounds without discrimination or distortion, the original recording was done on an Ampex 300-C Magnetic Tape Recorder at 15 IPS using Scotch tape. To effectively record the full frequency spectrum Telefunken U-47M microphones were used. Tape to disc transfer employed an automatic Scully lathe with heated stylus using a Grampion feedback cutter system. Disc recording utilizes the standard RIAA recording curve. - omslag

To paraphrase an old saying: 'You can take the song out of the Country, but you can't take the Country out of the song."
Actually, nobody wants to; Country songs are too good as is and, besides, they're doing too well in the city!

This album is proof of that statement; every one of these songs came from the Country, and every one was a big hit in the city-all cities, to be exact.

Slim Whitman is an artist who is certainly qualified to sing these songs for the simple reason that he is not only a seasoned Country music performer but one who has made records that have sold very well in the so-called 'pop" market.

This, then, is a collection for all those who like either-or both-of these two kinds of music. If that includes you, you're in for a listening treat. - omslag

One of the most amazing things about the country and Western music field is the longevity of artists, especially in recent years when the market has become so hectic and changeable. Unlike pop singers who have their ups and downs according to the musical fad of the day, Western artists, once they establish themselves, seem to build a loyal following. Their fans buy their records regardless of who else is selling or what type of song they record.

An artist in point 's Slim Whitman. Slim is, and has been for the past eight years, one of the giants of the Western music field, Since his first hit record, 'Love Song Of The Water Fall," Slim has been one of the highest paid and most in-demand performers in the business.
This holds true, even if he doesn't have a hit record on the charts for six months. Abroad it's the same way. In 1956, he was the first Western artist to tour Britain on his own and the only Western artist to play the famous London Palladium. Every year since, the clamor for another tour is just as loud as ever. Australian bookers have been trying for years to pry him away from his Florida home for a concert tour.

Slim defies Western singers' traditional choice of songs, Though he has hit records with such Western tunes as "'Cattle Call" and "Singing Hills," he has also racked up million sales with classic songs as "Secret Love,"' "Beautiful Dreamer," "When I Grow Too Old Too Dream,"
"Indian Love Call," and "Rose Marie." He has always felt that if a song is good, it can be done in any style with any type of orchestration, as long as it is done in good taste. His recording of "Rose Marie," which sold 1,000,000 copies in Great Britain in just two months, still stands today as one of that nation's all-time best sellers.

Before turning to singing professionally, Slim had a promising career in professional baseball. It was his teammates whom he entertained after each game who encouraged him to enter the singing field. He began singing at a radio station in Tampa, Florida, then joined Mutual Broadcasting for a series of programs and then onto Shreveport, Louisiana to join "Louisiana Hayride." While on this show he was signed by Imperial Records.

More than just knowing what his vocal capabilities are, Slim has the knack of knowing what his record buyers want. What is more incongruos, on first thought, than a Western artist singing some of musical comedy's most beautiful songs, such as "Rose Marie?" But Slim felt it and knew it would be acceptable.

As you may gather, Slim Whitman is a seasoned, talented performer and not a product of a musical fad of the day. He can sing with the prettiest pop voice and twang with the best of the cowboys, should be choose. Again, unlike most Western singers, he shies away from the usual cowboy laments in favor of pretty ballads, lyrically interesting songs and semi-classical songs. His voice is exceptionally pure, rich, and melodic for a Western singer. But this is what makes him stand out from the pack.

Since high fidelity recording includes a true reproduction of all sounds without discrimination or distortion, the original recording was done on an Ampex 300-C Magnetic. Tape Recorder at 15 IPS using Scotch tape. To effectively record the full frequency spectrum Telefunken U-47M microphones were used. Though virtually all its passengers were filled with an air of frivolity, eagerly anticipating a vacation to be spent in London, hiking on the moors of Scotland or the trip on to gay Paris, there was one passenger amongst all this gayety who approached his visit with an air of anticipation. The gentleman in question was Slim Whitman, one of Uncle Sam's most popular folk singers about to embark on bis first concert tour of England.
Had Slim Whitman known what was to follow, he'd have immediately abandoned the unwarranted shadow that hovered over him. For Mr. Whitman not only stayed on performing in London for the longest run any performer, including Danny Kaye, Bob Hope and Jack Benny, have ever had, but in the vernacular of show business, he "knocked 'em dead".
The Slim Whitman success story that made headlines in British papers, the wire services in the United States, and produced teams of copy in the bibles of the entertainment industry, The Billboard and Variety, is one that has been repeated here quite often. For Slim Whitman has that certain, unexplainable air about him that literally exudes popularity, and a charm and talent that has won him hordes of fans throughout the world. Whitman's success in England is still rather unexplainable to. many. As the first country and western performer ever to invade England and do nothing more than sing, work with no trick horses, ropes, jugglers or other show business glitter, why was it that he won so many fans during his tour of England?
Perhaps the best way it can be explained is that Whitman first and foremost is a folk singer. There are no frills aoout Mr. Whitman, no ostentatious airs, no attempt to have audiences believe anything about Whitman that he is not, His performance is equally as free of superfluous "business", all of which generally are done in an attempt to add something to the performer's art which was lacking to begin with. Whitman imparted a bit of Americana in his tour of England, something that few performers have been able to do before, and do well. When Slim sang of "Tumbling Tumbleweeds", a field of Kansas corn or a deepply furrowed acre of the rich, fertile soil of Oklahoma.
The selections included in the album are truly American folk songs. The lone exception is "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen", a song that has a particularly special warm spot for Whitman isince it was greeted with enthusiastic response in all of his appearances on the Continent. "When I Grow Too Old To Dream" has long been a favorite of Americans everywhere-it's a melody to be sung gathered about the family piano, by college students at a Spring Sing, or by GI's fighting their constant enemy, loneliness. "I'm Casting A Lasso Towards The Sky" and 'Haunted Hungry Heart" have long been identified with Whitman, and although they are woeful songs, they aptly depist the truism of American folk songs, the simple yet unvarnished tale of men who worked with their hands and their hearts.
Had it not been for his service in the U. S. Navy during, World War II, Slim Whitman may yet have achieved fame as a professional baseball player rather than as an entertainer. For it was Slim's singing and guitar pickin' aboard ship that eventually decided which path he would take. A semi-pro ballplayer before the war, Slim had started to rise in the ranks of minor league baseball and was already being watched by a number of major league scouts.
Ball player or folk singer, there's no denying that Slim Whitman has been a hit. Accorded the title 'America's Favorite Folk Singer" in 1953 and 1954, he has since gone on to prove his right to the accolade, as evidenced by his continuing popularity on records, at personal appearances and at a plain, old fashioned American hoe-down. .
