Brenda Fassie (Mabrr) (-2004)
Brenda Fassie was a legendary South African pop singer widely considered a voice for disenfranchised blacks during apartheid. She was affectionately known as the Queen of African Pop and her nickname amongst fans was Mabrr. Known best for her songs "Weekend Special" and "Too Late for Mama", she was called by Time Magazine in 2001 "The Madonna of the Townships". Since 1996 she released several solo albums like "Now Is The Time", "Memeza" (1997, the best selling album in South Africa in 1998) and "Nomakanjani?". Most of her albums became multi-platinum sellers in South Africa. Brenda died at age 39 in 2004 from an overdose of cocaine.

By 1983 Brenda Fassie had formed an act of her own called Brenda & The Big Dudes, and that year she had a breakthrough hit with "Weekend Special," singing in the disco-flavored "bubblegum" style. "Weekend Special" sold over 200,000 copies and had an extended life in cover versions and remixes, including one by New York producer Van Gibbs in 1986 that spent eight weeks on Billboard magazine's Hot Black Singles chart. The song's international success led to a Brenda Fassie tour of the United States, Europe, Australia, and Brazil.
