Amongst the younger generation, Bennie Raubenheimer is decidedly one of the champions of modern, light Afrikaans music. He was born on the 4th of April 1930 at Bronkhorstspruit in the Transvaal, where he passed through primary and secondary schools with comparative ease and also received his first musical
The first indications of his talent became clear during his boyhood when he sang with a most attractive soprano voice. In three consecutive years, he was awarded first prize, when he sang in the Pretoria Afrikaans Eisteddfod. Eventually the soprano changed into a bariton, but his singing gradually gave way to his interest in the accordion.
While following a three years course of study at the Stellenbosch University from 1947 onwards, he took part in singing and playing the piano and accordion, as a member of the "Ritmiese Agt" and the "Stellenbosse Pretmakers". This period is also marked by the first broadcasts from Cape Town of his singing and accordion music. .
In 1950 he had six months full time musical experience with Danie Smuts and his group who toured South West Africa. After this Bennie came to live in Pretoria permanently, where he has been a member of several bands in succession; amongst others for six months a full time member of Hendrik Susan's orchestra in Johannesburg, at that time the most excellent group of its kind. lt was not until 1954 that he ventured to establish his own group, who still provide entertainment at dances and who take part in the regular broadcasting of light Afrikaans music.
Instead of following the original stereotype combination, a systematic change took place in his music, greatly because Bennie is constantly in search of a new tone - something novel in Afrikaans. His latest combination orginated a year ago and we gladly present it here, in quintet form. With this new combination of melody by Bennie (piano accordion), Hansie van Loggerenberg (vibrophone), Chris du Toit (melody guitar) and the rhythm section managed by Johnny van Staden (bass), Ken du Plessis (rhythmic guitar), and Johnny Buys (drums), we feel confident'that they have succeeded in producing "Novel Tones in Afrikaans."
